See how to use furniture you already have, making an inviting bed, choosing the perfect color palette for a guest room, and more!

I think guest rooms are sometimes an afterthought in our homes. They get all the discarded furniture or are used as a spare room to put the things we want to keep but don’t know where to put them! Today let’s talk about the guest room in our downsized home and see how our guest room has evolved.

We have two guest rooms in our home. One we call the front guest room and the other is called the golf guest room.

We are in the process of doing a complete makeover of the front room. You can see the plans HERE.

Our goal is to have this room company-ready by mid Fall!

The other room is called the golf guest room and here’s why…

This room has lovely views of the golf course!

THE GOLF GUEST ROOM THEN AND NOW

I have been moving furniture around the golf room for quite a while.

Here’s how this bedroom looked after we moved in…

Here’s a peek at how it looks now!

I love the idea of a blue guest room, but I just was not that happy with how it looked. So I lightened up the guest room with lots of neutrals. Ahhhhh, now this room looks comfortable!

These familiar colors looked so much better! And since our home has a whole home color palette there are so many good pieces of furniture and other decor that worked in this guest room.

THE GOLF GUEST ROOM COLOR PALETTE

Creating a calm and neutral color palette for this guest room felt like going home! It just worked!

Here are the soothing colors I used for this room…

One of the biggest things that affect a space in our home is color! So choosing the right color palette is incredibly important!

It is a guide and a filter by which all the choices for a room should be made! How To Choose A Color Palette For Your Home is one of the most important decorating posts you can read! No hyperbole, just trust me on this! It is loaded with helpful info, tips, and aha moments to help you create and use the perfect color palette for a room or your whole home.

Once I switched the color palette, the guest room became so much easier to decorate!

THE DRESSER

Almost everything in this room came from our StoneGable home.

Because we have a whole house color palette (well, almost) so much of the furniture and other decor can move from one room to another with ease.

I really don’t like the thought of a guest room with a lot of hand-me-down furnishings. However, most of the things in our guest room were things I just had to keep when we downsized. They were my favorites!

Like the dresser in the golf guest room!

This dresser was originally in our master bedroom at StoneGable. But our master bedroom at the Tanglewood House is smaller so we moved the dresser to the golf guest room.

The mirror came from our foyer and the lamp came from Tanglewood’s sunroom via the living room. It originally lived at StoneGable in the family room.

I keep things in this guest room rather uncluttered. It’s important for our guests to be able to spread their things out. All the drawers and closets are bare so our family and guests can use them without fighting through our things.

THE CHAIR

The small upholstered chair came from StoneGable’s breakfast area and Tanglewood’s dining area. These chairs can either be dining chairs or accent chairs. I have 5 other chairs just like it in the basement. I love them! And recently I’ve been thinking about putting them back around the dining room table.

We will see! You never know what changes are happening at the Tanglewood House.

The only new thing in this golf bedroom is behind the chair. The curtains are new to this room but the curtain rods came from a room at StoneGable.

THE BED

Here’s the bed in the golf guest room…

And here’s where all the different elements that make up the bed and bedding came from…

The headboard came from our master bedroom at Tanglewood and StoneGable. The same with the dust ruffle.

The scripture verse above the bed came from the foyer.

The white coverlet and the chevron blanket also came from the master bedroom.

The white Euro shams came from the Gable guest room at StoneGable and the white duvet came from our son’s room also at StoneGable

I’m particularly fond of the gray throw. It has been in more rooms than I can remember. It has a grounding effect on the very light neutral room in our home.

The patterned Euro shams lived in our living room and family room at StoneGable and also the sunroom and living room here at the Tanglewood house. I found these shams at the Pottery Barn over a decade ago and still love them.

They are bed Euro shams but I have used them as anchor pillows on my sofas. They are also great for throwing on the floor and watching tv.

THE SCONCES

The gold sconces are one of my favorite things in the guest room. They were originally purchased for the master bedroom at StoneGable.

I like these sconces because they are not hardwired. They have an attractive gold rod with an electric cord inside it.

OTHER DECOR

The rug originally was in our son’s bedroom at StoneGable. I have quite a collection of rugs in the basement so I’m thinking one day when Bobby is not at work or on the golf course I will ask for his help and try out several other rugs in this room.

The nightstand is a small accent table, that like so many of the things in this guest room, have shown up in multiple rooms at StoneGable and Tanglewood!

I’ve been looking for new nightstands to put on either side of the bed. So far, I’m not finding what I’m looking for!

I’ve also toyed with the idea of putting a desk on the wall the round table is on. The golf bedroom is large and a small desk with a chair might look really nice in here.

EVER-EVOLVING

We are really never done decorating! Things are in a constant flux of adding and editing at Tanglewood! And so is this bedroom!
